Oscar Valdez

He climbed to the No. 1 spot in ESPN’s 130-pound rankings and became a two-division champion. Yet much goodwill was washed away by the news that Valdez tested positive for the banned substance phentermine, a stimulant.

Star fighters like Devin Haney, Josh Taylor and Shakur Stevenson lashed out at him on Twitter, questioning if he was a clean fighter. And when it came time for Valdez to tackle Robson Conceicao on Friday night at the Casino del Sol in Tucson, Arizona, he was far from the dominant fighter who broke Berchelt.

Nogales went down 3-1 to Berchelt, 30, of Sonora, Mexico, by Valdez (30-0, 23 KO). Valdez was a 16-1 favourite, entering the fight with Concicao (16-1, 8 KO), 32, of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Yet he struggled with Conceicao, unable to close the distance in the first five rounds

Fight

After all the controversy and talking about his positive drug test, Oscar Valdez finally got it out of his mind and got to work.

The ESPN main event on Friday night before a declared sold-out crowd of 4,545 at the AVA Amphitheater in Casino del Sol was the result of hard work and a competitive unanimous decision to retain his WBC Junior Lightweight title against Robson Conceicao in Top Rank Boxing. Tucson, Arizona, is where Valdez grew up and still sees as a second home.

Conceicao fought well for most of the first half of the fight but Valdez held on in the second half and won 115-112, 115-112 and surprisingly 117-110 to maintain his 130-pound belt which he was defending for the first time. Since taking it from Miguel Berchelt in a dominating turnaround that ended with a spectacular one-punch, left-hook knockout in the 10th round on February 20 in Las Vegas. The Ring also gave Valdez a 115–112 victory.

Canelo

Oscar Valdez says he has benefited from training with Canelo Alvarez. Since joining Eddie Reynoso’s stable, Valdez has looked sensational as he jumped to super-featherweight and took Miguel Berchelt’s WBC title with a vicious knockout earlier this year.

On Friday night in Tucson, Arizona, Valdez will defend his world title first against Brazil’s Robson Conceicao, his amateur nemesis. While spending time at camp with Canelo, Valdez is soaking up advice from boxing’s best fighter as he prepares to settle the score with Concecao.

Speaking to Vegas Insider, Valdez said, “One of the things Canelo Alvarez teaches is how to punch. How do you make a difference by leaving your fist there, like you’re stabbing a fighter? The little things that make a difference.
