His car number is 2. Piastri joined the Renault Sport Academy in January 2020. After securing the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2020, Piastri was rewarded for his efforts by the Renault F1 team at a young driver test in Bahrain on 31 October 2020 along with fellow Renault Sport Academy drivers Christian. Lundgaard and Guanyue Zhou. In the 2021 season, Piastri will find himself part of the rebranded Alpine Academy along with Zhou, Lundgaard, Victor Martins and Caio Collet.

Piastri is the reserve driver for the Alpine F1 team in the 2022 Formula One Championship. During the season he has been testing F1 cars on various tracks around the world.

In August 2022, the Alpine F1 team announced Piastri for their 2023 driver lineup, replacing Fernando Alonso, who had recently signed a multi-year deal with Aston Martin for the 2023 season. However, an hour later, Piastri condemned Alpine’s announcement via a source on Twitter, saying he had not signed a contract with the team and would not be driving for them in 2023.

Manager

There has been speculation that Piastri’s manager, former Australian F1 driver Mark Webber, is trying to get his charge at McLaren to replace Daniel Ricciardo.

Ricciardo’s struggles with the British team in 2022 and this season have been well documented and there have been repeated reports that he wants a new driver to pair up with Lando Norris.

“Whatever arrangement he (Weber) has with McLaren, I don’t know about it,” Szafner told Autosport.

‘But I hear the same rumors you do in the pitlane. But what I do know is that they have contractual obligations towards us. And we do that. And we’ve been honoring those obligations throughout the year.

‘ and those obligations, up to ’23’ and possibly into ’24, if certain options are taken.

‘So we have a legal contract with them for ’23’ in the future. And if an option is taken, ’24. So I don’t know what he has done to McLaren. Like I said, I don’t know about it.

‘Oscar and his camp are looking at their options, no matter what.’
