Oscar Piastri (born 6 April 2001) is an Australian racing driver who currently serves as reserve driver for the Alpine F1 team, having previously been in the team’s driver academy. He won the 2019 Formula Renault Eurocup, the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship and the 2021 Formula 2 Championship with Prema Racing. He is only the sixth driver to win the GP2/Formula 2 Championship in his rookie season, and the fifth to win the GP3/Formula 3 Championship and GP2/Formula 2 Championship in consecutive seasons.

Ahead of his promotion as Alpine’s official Formula 1 reserve driver, we caught up with the 2021 Formula 2 champion, Oscar Piastri, who took us on a tour of his helmet design and discussed the story behind it.
“My first helmet was an off-the-shelf HJC, I think,” Piastri began. “It was a red, black and gray vinyl design. I had that when I first started and then a white helmet for about two years.
“After that, I was planning on getting a painted helmet, but I had a karting accident where I overturned and destroyed my white helmet, so I need a new helmet for next weekend.
“Lucky Design sent a bunch of pre-painted designs to Australia and I picked one I liked, which was blue and red. That was my first design, and so my helmet is now blue and red.

Oscar Piastri was born to his parents in an Italian family. Oscar’s father, Chirs Piastri, is his biggest influencer and was his collaborator during the first few years of the Oscar race. Oscar used to go go-karting with his father when he was a kid, and he accompanied him to all his races. When his child was competing in Australia, Chris was his technician. Oscar considers his father to be the most influential person in his life. Oscar’s mother is also one of his biggest supporters and he dedicates his victory to his mother.
