Venus Williams

Ons Jabeu

LONDON: Ons Jabur, the first Arab woman to win a WTA tournament, reached the third round of Wimbledon for the first time on Wednesday after beating five-time champion Venus Williams 7-5, 6-0.

Williams excludes her sister Serena from the singles tournament, although she will play mixed doubles with Nick Kyrgios. Serena burst into tears from center court on Tuesday after injuring her right leg in the first set of their match.

Jabeur set up break point with a graceful cross court forehand to Williams in the long first game of the second set and secured the break when Williams sent the forehand wide.

It looked like the fight was out to Williams as Jabur stepped up his game and broke the American in his next service game and then served for the match.

Vs Muguruza

Ons Jabeu

Ons Jabur’s talent has never been in doubt. Between her sweet, delicate hand skills, the limitless creativity she plays and being in possession of one of the most powerful forehands in the entire nation, she always has everything within her game to beat the best.

Beyond his identity and what he means to both the sport and his country, Jaboor Bhi is just wild, unadulterated fun. Off the court, she is one of the most sociable players who charms every opponent who crosses her path. On the court, she plays with so much freedom that she wins over the crowd wherever she goes.

In those opening exchanges, Jaboor’s streak could have been his downfall against a focused and intense Muguruza, recently refreshed after a struggle with injury, who closed the opening set after some supreme comebacks.
