Current teams

Lightning general manager Julian Brycebois called Ondrej Palt on Wednesday morning, hours before the left was about to test free agency, to thank them for their years in Tampa Bay uniform.

BriseBois knew Palat would be difficult to retain, but if there is anyone who can use the cap space to keep the team intact, it is BriseBois. But despite their best efforts, the Lightning had to part with one of the key pieces of their Stanley Cup-winning teams.

Late Wednesday, after a busy opening day of free agency around the league, ESPN and NJ.com reported that Palt planned to sign with the Devils.

Daughter

Ondrej and his wife Barbara have no daughter yet.

Contract details

Free-agent forward Ondrej Palt has agreed a five-year, $30 million contract with the New Jersey Devils.

After helping the team reach the finals this year after winning the Stanley Cup over the past two years, Palat has been a clutch performer for the Tampa Bay Lightning season after season.

After the last three seasons, Palt has scored 27 goals and 25 assists in 71 playoff games.

Next contract

As Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston reports, Palat secured a five-year, $30 million contract with the Devils on Wednesday.

The turn was always going to be difficult to hold down Lightning. It got even tougher after Anthony Cirelli, Mikhail Sergachev and Eric Cernak received eight-year contract extensions on Wednesday. The platoon is gone instead, and he will go from a championship-caliber team looking to make his next move in 2022–23. The 31-year-old should serve as a steady veteran in a top-six role, while potentially guaranteeing regular play alongside either Jack Hughes or Nico Hisier.
