The 2000 Summer Olympics saw the first appearance of the triathlon. 48 women and 52 men competed in separate triathlons. The distances used were “international” or “standard”, with a 1.5 km (0.93 mi) swim, a 40 km (25 mi) cycle, and a 10 km (6.2 mi) run.

Distance

Olympic Triathlon

Triathlon is an endurance sport that combines swimming, road cycling and distance running, performed in that order. Events are held at various distances but the ‘Olympic distance’ for men and women is a 1,500 m swim, 40 km bike ride and a 10 km run.

A very respectable time would be around six hours. If you’re approaching five, you’re doing great, and if you’re a little over six as a woman, you’re still looking to have a good time. Think about it this way: You’ll need to swim in 45 minutes, bike in three hours, and run in 2:15.

Most common triathlon distances follow international Olympic guidelines. It includes a swim of 0.93 miles (1.5 kilometers), a bicycle ride of 24.8 miles (40 kilometers) and a run of 6.2 miles (10 kilometers).

Qualifying places are first awarded through the ITU Mixed Relay Ranking of 31 March 2020, with seven NOCs each earning four quota spots (two per gender). Three more NOCs can secure four quota spots in the 2020 ITU Mixed Relay Olympic Qualification Event.

The Olympic distance triathlon, also known as the ‘standard distance’, begins with a 1500m swim, followed by a 40km bike and a 10km run. This is the distance you run at the Olympic Games and ITU World Championships, and the best in the world will usually manage to cover it in about 1 hour 50 minutes.
