When Rob Caldwell first met Oliver Wahlstrom, he was 9 years old and went viral for a trick shot he pulled on the ice during a Boston Bruins game.

At the age of 13, Wahlstrom took the internet by storm again when he verbally committed to a Maine hockey program before entering high school.

Tonight – At age 18, Wahlstrom is skating for the New York Islanders. The Yarmouth native is believed to be the most drafted Maine-born player in NHL history.

We wanted to see his early debut… and the 2009 story with Rob Caldwell that made it clear Wahlstrom was destined for the NHL.

Fantasy

Newsday reports Andrew Gross demoted Rangers vs Wahlstrom to the fourth row on Tuesday.
Coach Len Lambert is not pleased with Wahlstrom, especially after the winger failed to register a shot on goal in more than 11 minutes of ice time versus the Flames on Monday. Wahlstrom opened the game with Casey Szykas and Matt Martin. However, the trio is unlikely to last long as only one spot was open as Cal Clutterbuck had to miss the game due to an undisclosed injury. If Clutterbuck can play Thursday versus the Coyotes, he will be back on that line, and Lambert will have to find another place for Wahlstrom to play.

If he can come back for the start of his season, it will help the top-6 a lot.

Much love goes to Owen Power for winning the Calder Trophy, but unless Rasmus Dahlin suffers an injury, he will be kept away from the top PP unit. Quinn has been consistently top-6 through Precision and was phenomenal in the AHL. He just needs to be at the top of the lineup after the initial season trials.

Calgary Flames – Oliver Killington

With the inclusion of Mackenzie Weiger, another team full of veterans, Kyllington could be tough for minutes. Their tracking stats (via Corey Sznajder) were excellent last year and the team looks as dangerous as ever. Even limited ice time could have threatened him with 40 points. It’s assuming that any personal case he’s dealing with is in the lineup sooner rather than later.

Carolina Hurricanes – Seth Jarvis

In a perfect world for Carolina, Jarvis, Martin Necas, and Jesperi Kotakanami all make big leaps. Jarvis had a great rookie season with very good underlying numbers and has often been skating on the wing of Sebastian Aho. He has the ability to score 25 goals.

Chicago Blackhawks – Taylor Radisho

The way Chicago has built up this awesome roster means no breakouts are likely, but at least Radish has a capable NHL playmaker on his line (Max Domi). He could see several minutes once players started trading to advance the tank’s work.

Colorado Avalanche – Bowen Byram

Alex Newhook is going to get every opportunity for a second-line role, but it was Byram who looked phenomenal for Colorado in the post season, especially after an injury to Samuel Girardi. Even without the prime PPTOI, the team could easily have scored enough for him to support 40 points.

Scouting report

11 pick in the 2018 NHL Draft is a natural goalscorer who owns a rocket for a shot. He turns the puck away quickly and with a lot of power, and he is a major weapon on the power play. Willing to stick his nose even to get into dirty areas, and he has the shape to stop checkers. The rest of his game is still a work in progress, and his ability to improve his game away from the puck will determine how successful his career becomes.

Contract

The New York Islanders announced today that Oliver Wahlstrom has agreed to a three-year entry-level contract that will begin at the start of the 2019-20 season.

Internationally, Wahlström played for Team USA at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships.
