Rumors
With Clayton Thorson possibly dealing with an injury following the preseason loss to the New York Jets on Saturday night, the New York Giants decided to make an addition to the depth chart. NY Giants
The Giants are signing Brian Lewerke, per his agent.
Roster 2020
The 2020 season was the New York Giants‘ 96th in the National Football League and their first under head coach Joe Judge. For the first time since 2003, long-time quarterback Eli Manning was not on the roster, as he announced his retirement on January 22.
Despite starting the season 0–5 for the third time in eight years, the Giants improved on their 4–12 record from the previous season with their week 13 upset win over the Seattle Seahawks and rallied to finish 6–10, but despite beating their divisional rivals the Dallas Cowboys, the Giants failed to win the NFC East or make the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year, following the Washington Football Team winning their final game against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 17. The Giants would’ve needed the Eagles to win in order to win the NFC East due to their head-to-head record against Washington, and it would’ve made them the first team in the Super Bowl era to make the playoffs with a double-digit losing record. On July 20, 2020 the Giants confirmed that their home games would take place without fans in attendance due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.
Trade
New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman insisted that he didn’t want to get fleeced in the deal if he traded down in the draft.
It turns out that Gettleman, in his first trade down in the first round as an NFL general manager, did the fleecing, getting the Chicago Bears’ first and fifth picks in this year’s draft plus their first and fourth (Nos. 20 and 164) in next year’s draft.
FA News
It’s a high-pressure year for the New York Giants, and the message to Dave Gettleman is clear: playoffs or unemployment. The fact that Gettleman wasn’t fired after the 2020 season was a surprise, but there’s no longer any excuse for him if the Giants don’t make the playoffs this year.
The team invested heavily in free agency to give Daniel Jones potent weapons to work some magic and the Giants now need to turn their attention towards the salary cap. Some well-known players could be on their way out in the next few weeks.
