Novak Djokovic has said that he would prefer to miss out on future tennis trophies rather than be forced to get the Kovid vaccine.

Speaking exclusively to the BBC, he said that his job position in competitions such as the French Open was “the price I am willing to pay”.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner was deported from Australia last month after the government revoked his visa over his vaccine status.

Djokovic described the circumstances during his detention as “very difficult”.

He said he did not speak to the media at the time – despite wanting to – because he wanted to respect the legal process and the Australian Open.

The world number one male tennis player also said that he should not be associated with the anti-vax movement, but supported the right of a person to choose.

He said he had obtained medical exemption to enter the country to play at the Australian Open as he had recently recovered from Covid-19.

Novak Djokovic is once again at the center of controversy in the tennis world after nearly hitting a ball kid with his racket in the final of the Serbia Open. Djokovic’s title drought in 2022 continued on Sunday as he lost 6-2 6-7 (4-7) 6-0 to Andrey Rublev in the final on his home court in Belgrade.

Djokovic’s participation in next week’s Australian Open has been derailed due to a dispute over his visa. The tennis star, who is without vaccination, last week had her visa revoked despite traveling to Australia with a controversial vaccine exemption. Yet on Monday a judge dramatically overturned the decision and the player was released from detention.

After winning the Australian Open in February, Novak Djokovic vowed to lighten his schedule this year and spend more time with his young family.

The world No. 1 had just won her ninth Australian Open title and 18th career Grand Slam, but was feeling sad for her family to be on the other side of the world.
