Davis Cup
Novak Djokovic’s dream of adding a second Davis Cup to his 20 Grand Slam titles was shattered on Friday when Serbia defeated Croatia in the semi-finals. Djokovic and his teammate Filip Krajinovic suffered a 7-5, 6-1 loss to top-ranked Mate Pavic and Olympic and Wimbledon champion Nikola Mektic in the deciding doubles match. 2005 and 2018 Davis Cup winners Croatia will take on either Russia or Germany in Sunday’s final.
Djokovic had previously kept Serbia alive by defeating Marin Cilic for the 18th time.
The world number one unbeaten in singles in the tournament since 2011 drew a 6-4, 6-2 win to level Serbia 1-1.
It was his 19th consecutive Davis Cup singles win.
In the opening round, 279th-ranked Borna Gojo registered a surprise victory over world number 33 Dusan Lajovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
World number three Cilic, now down 30, scored eight break points on Djokovic’s serve but failed to score a goal.
The loss for Serbia meant Djokovic called off his 2021 season, when he missed the first calendar Grand Slam by a male player in more than half a century after losing in the final of the US Open.
His hopes of the first Olympic singles gold medal in Tokyo were also dashed.
