Doping
The Lance Armstrong Way “How Not to Handle Doping in Your Sport 101” sounds like the perfect example.
The cycling legend denied doping for years. This soured relations and led to legal disputes.
Apparently didn’t sign up for the class. In defending the integrity of his game, Djokovic almost channeled the wrong guy.
After being voted Laureus World Sportsman of the Year in Berlin on Monday, he did an interview with CNN in which he blamed the media for the stories of doping in tennis.
Prediction
To say that Fabio Fognini has the better of this rivalry would be an understatement. They have met nine times and the Italian has won eight of them (albeit one after retirement). That said, when they last faced off in Córdoba in 2019, it was Aljaz Bedin who came out on top and comfortably, losing just five games in a comprehensive 6-4 6-1 victory. But the Slovenian, who is currently working to recover from injury, could work hard to support that win.
He showed impressive grit to see the veteran Mikhail Kukushkin in three tough sets, but this was hardly an old performance from Bedin. Fognini is also not the force he once was, but after a slow start against his compatriot Marco Cecinato, he found his limits to register a 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 win. In the end, if both men play their best tennis, Fognini will win the match. If no man plays his best tennis, Fognini will probably still win.
Coach
The veteran Slovakia, who has one of the most decorated coaches in tennis history, had taken a step back since 2019 when Goran Ivanisevic joined the team.
He is no longer a part of Djokovic’s team and has spoken for the first time since the news surfaced.
Part of his decision to stop coaching Djokovic was his desire for a new challenge.
He told Slovakian news outlet Acculity: “I want to experience something new afterward, a new challenge with another player, but the bar is too high.”
Ranking
In June 2021, the 34-year-old ranked 46th on Forbes’ list of the 100 highest-paid athletes in the world, with the trade magazine calculating earnings of $34.5 million over the past 12 months. This figure breaks down to $4.5m in court earnings and $30m from endorsements.
Djokovic’s sponsors include sportswear makers Asics and Lacoste, tennis equipment specialist Head and watch maker Hublot.
In August 2021, Forbes estimated Djokovic’s annual income at a high figure of $38m, making the Serb the fourth highest-paid tennis player in the world over the previous year, surpassed by Roger Federer ($90.6m), Naomi Osaka ($60.1m) and Serena Williams ($41.8m).
