Defense

Norman Powell

Powell was shooting 43.9% at three-pointers at the time, so he certainly expected to fit in with the team’s growing trend to launch threes. But adding scoring was not at the top of the team’s needs. The Blazers’ defense was in shambles and needed the assistance of a 6-foot-3 guard.

The team’s mindset, Powell said, has certainly shifted to one with a defensive slant. After the Blazers’ win at Indiana, Lillard said that he had shifted his approach defensively, while also realizing that the team had to play with a greater sense of desperation at both ends if they hoped to save the season.

Contract

Norman Powell

Norman Powell will sign a five-year, $90 million contract with the Portland Trail Blazers, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The former Toronto Raptors guard averaged 18.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists on 47.7 percent shooting in the 69 games split between Toronto and Portland last season.

Powell signed a four-year, $42 million deal with the Raptors, which ended in a player-option season. He hasn’t valued free agency that much yet, and he was smart not to accept the player’s option to stay with Portland for another season because there’s a solid market for his talent.

Powell is a career 38% 3-point shooter. …but he has been one of the best 3-point shooters in the NBA over the past three seasons. Powell is 10th in the NBA this season with 43.9% accuracy, after shooting 39.9% last season and 40% last season.

Although Norman Powell exploded for a career-high 43 points, the Pistons were able to stop the Raptors’ return in the fourth quarter behind some big shots and a very clutch bucket from Jeremy Grant.

Powell scored 29 points (11-15 FG, 4-4 3Pt, 3-3 FT), two rebounds, two blocks, an assist and a steal in 34 minutes in Saturday’s win over the Nuggets.

Trade

Norman Powell

Norman Powell has a career average of 19.6 points this season. PORTLAND, Ore (AP) – The Portland Trail Blazers have acquired shooting guard Norman Powell in a trade with the Toronto Raptors, the teams announced Thursday. In return, the Blazers have sent Gary Trent Jr.

The Trail Blazers brought down Raptors guard Norman Powell in exchange for Gary Trent Jr. and Rodney Hood just before the NBA trade deadline hit. … the peloton highlighted Powell’s ability to retain his prowess as his role grew during the Raptors’ struggles.

Salary

Considering the long-term money the Raptors already have invested in Pascal Siakam, Fred VanValet and Ozzy Anunobi, it’s difficult to bring Powell back to Toronto and lock in even more cap space in a core that has really taken off the competition. Has not shown ability. The Eastern Conference is progressing without another star.

The alternative for Toronto is to wait until the off-season, ride this season and see if things change with Powell. Assuming he doesn’t get too quiet, they can work a sign-and-trade with him, though it’s certainly more difficult given that Powell will be in the driver’s seat for any conversation.
