The Angels woke up on Friday morning with four teams and a jump to reach the final playoff spot and FanGraphs’ chances as low as 0.7%. Either way, they’re trying to last as long as possible, especially until Mike Trout returns. And they need cover at first base because C.J. Cron has struggled with a back injury and recent 2021 All-Star Jared Walsh has struggled with strength throughout the season.
However, the bigger picture is that it seems to be a win-win. We’re well past the date of achieving a full year of major league service time in 2023, and with the end of the regular season 44 days away on Friday, players can still compete for the 2024 Rookie of the Year award. If they remain on the active roster for the rest of the season (provided their number does not exceed 130).
The Angels could fill an immediate need, given how Shanuel stacks up against major league pitching this season is part of. The Angels have already called up Zack Neto and Sam Bachman and Ben Joyce, and they’ve given Mickey Moniak and Logan O’Hoppe plenty of opportunities. Shanuel was an All-American selection and the 2023 Conference USA Player of the Year at Florida Atlantic University. He was second in the nation in batting average (.447), and finished with 19 homers and 64 RBI.

The Rocket City Trash Pandas, in conjunction with the Los Angeles Angels, announced today that infielder Nolan Shanuel, the Angels’ first-round selection in the 2023 MLB Draft, has been promoted to Double-A Rocket City.
Shanuel made his debut on July 21 and pitched in five games between the Arizona Complex League Angels and the Low-A Inland Empire. He is expected to make his Double-A debut later this week as the Trash Pandas continue their series against the Tennessee Smokies.
Shanuel (pronounced Shawn-yoo-l) is off to a hot start as a professional, hitting .500 (7-for-14) with three RBIs, five walks and five runs scored in his first five games.
The first baseman is coming off a historic 2023 season for Florida Atlantic, hitting .447 with 19 home runs, 64 RBI, 71 walks, 18 doubles and 70 runs in 59 games. He led all of Division I baseball in batting average (.447), on-base percentage (.615), and walks (71), while ranking third in the nation in slugging percentage (.868). He reached base safely in 54 straight games, the longest such streak in Division I baseball in 2023.
The Angels selected Chanuel with the 11th overall selection in the MLB draft on July 9, making him the first Florida Atlantic student athlete to be selected in the first round of a professional sports draft. It was just the latest in a long list of achievements for the 21-year-old from Boynton Beach, Florida.
This season, Shanuel became the third player in Florida Atlantic history to be named Conference USA Player of the Year and was one of 25 amateur players in the nation to be named a semifinalist for USA Baseball’s Golden Spikes Award.
Over three collegiate seasons, Shanuel batted .386 in 172 games with 46 home runs, 176 RBI, 179 runs scored, .516 on-base percentage and .698 slugging percentage. As a freshman in 2021, he was named a Freshman All-American and Second Team All-C-USA.
Scouting report
The reports from those scouts were basically that Shanuel was at least a plus hitter with plus pitch selection and plus power — a .270 average, a .350 on-base percentage and something like 25 homers, roughly speaking.
