US trials:

Lyles pounded his hand on the track four times, stood up straight and ripped off his jersey.

He grabbed his medal from the presenter, then went over and hugged his family and took hold of an American flag — one of many that have been needed at the first world championships to be held in the United States.

The sweep gave the U.S. 22 medals through seven days.

US championships results:

“America’s, like, scooping up medals left and right,” Lyles said. “This feels great because I’ve been waiting for America to come out and dominate since I got on the platform.”

Lyles’ 19.31 was the third-fastest time in history, behind only Usain Bolt’s 19.19 in 2009 and a 19.26 run two years later by another Jamaican, Yohan Blake, while he was briefly pushing Bolt for supremacy.

Thursday night was for the sprinters at the World Athletics Championships, as the men’s and women’s 200 meter finals took center stage in the only medal races of the session in Eugene, Oregon.

American Noah Lyles ran the third-fastest time in history and broke Michael Johnson’s American record, crossing the line in 19.31 seconds and winning the men’s race in dominant fashion.

Not known for running a great curve, Lyles had a tremendous start and took all of the suspense out of the finish before it was halfway over.

High School times:

Lyles broke a record that had stood for 26 years. 7:14 a.m. Alexandria City High School grad Noah Lyles set a new American record in the men’s 200m.

Lyles broke the 26-year-old record by .01 seconds when he won the men’s 200-meter final at the 2002 World Athletic Championships Thursday in Eugene, Oregon.
