Tournament schedule
Last season’s NIT was reduced to 16 teams and played entirely in two Texas arenas due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the 2022 edition of the event returning to normal. A full 32-team field was announced on Sunday night, and games will begin Tuesday at campus venues across the country.
While the NIT’s presence may seem like a consolation prize for the teams left at the door of the 68-team NCAA Tournament arena, the event is nothing to brag about with many of the events. Regular-season conference champions who don’t reach the Big Dance are guaranteed a NIT berth, which gives multiple teams a shot at redemption after losing a conference tournament.
One of the notable teams in that category this season is coach Rick Pitino’s Iona Gale, who won the MAAC but lost in their league tournament and did not receive an NCAA tournament bid. Another notable participant would be Conference USA regular-season champion North Texas, making its first NIT appearance. Mean Green and her coach, Grant McCastland, have been rising through college hoops after winning an NCAA Tournament game last season and the C-USA regular season title by two full games this season.

For those teams, as well as for events that never got a chance to perform the Big Dance, there is the NIT (National Invitational Tournament), which issued its own bracket shortly after its NCAA Tournament counterpart.
For the first time since 2019, we will see a full 32-team NIT field. The tournament was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 and in 2021 involving just 16 teams.
