Saban did not intend to enter the coaching ranks until Don James hired him as a graduate assistant at Kent State while Saban waited for his wife to graduate. He later served as an assistant coach in NCAA Division I-A at several schools: Syracuse in 1977, West Virginia in 1978 and 1979, Ohio State in 1980 and 1981, Navy in 1982, and Michigan State from 1983 to 1987.

After the 1987 season, Kent State left Saban and hired Dick Crum for their vacant head coaching position. Saban was then hired as an assistant to the Houston Oilers in the National Football League.

Saban began his career as a head coach when he was hired by the University of Toledo on December 22, 1989. After 6–5 seasons in both 1988 and 1989, the Rockets found quick success under Nick Saban in 1990. With a 9–2 season, Toledo was the co-champion of the Mid-American Conference. The two games the Rockets lost that season were by narrow margins: one point to Central Michigan and four to the Navy. While coaching in Toledo, Saban turned down an application from future head coach Urban Meyer, who was looking for a coaching job on Saban’s staff.

Jackson State head coach and NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders has responded to Alabama head coach Nick Saban that the school paid Travis Hunter $1 million to play for the Tigers by recruiting the No. 1 rank in the 2022 class. Did.

Sanders told Jean-Jacques Teller of Endscape:

“I haven’t spoken to Coach Saban. I’m sure he tried to call. We need to talk publicly – not in private. What you said was public. It doesn’t require a conversation.” Let’s talk in public and let everyone listen to the conversation. You can’t do that in public and can’t call in private. No no no. I still love her. I admire her. I respect him. He’s the magna cum loud of college football and that’s what’s going to happen because he earned that.”
Sanders’ comments came after Hunter denied being paid $1 million to play for Jackson State in a social media post Thursday morning.

Sanders also tweeted that Saban’s remarks were not accurate.

The 70-year-old also made a comment about Tigers Landing Hunter, who was originally committed to the state of Florida before completing his commitment to the state of Jackson in December 2021.

“Jackson State paid a million dollars last year to a guy who was a really good Division I player to come to school,” Saban said Wednesday, according to Tuscaloosa News’ Brett Greenberg. “It was in the paper. They bragged about it. Nobody did anything about it.”

Rumors were rife at the time that Hunter committed to Jackson state that Barstool Sports had offered him $1 million to play for the Tigers, according to Dan Lyons of Sports Illustrated. Speculation arose because Barstool Sports is associated with Sanders through its 21st and Prime podcasts.
