Kyrgios has never won Wimbledon before. In fact, prior to his 2022 appearance, his best finish at the event came in 2014, when he advanced to the quarterfinals (curiously, after a massive upset victory over Nadal, then the world’s No. 1 player).

Still, he acquitted himself well with his play, as Djokovic struggled to break his serve throughout.

Kyrgios, who had previously called Djokovic a “tool,” defended him amid his deportation from Australia earlier this year over his unvaccinated status. That seems to have helped to fuel their burying the hatchet.

Novak Djokovic proved again why he’s one of the best tennis players ever with a four-set victory Sunday over Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon, picking up his seventh championship at the All England Club.

Djokovic defeated Kyrgios 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7). He moves into a second-place tie for most wins at Wimbledon.

He’s tied with Pete Sampras and William Renshaw and one behind Roger Federer for most all time. He now has 21 total Grand Slam titles and is one behind Rafael Nadal for the most all time.

Early life and family. Kyrgios was born on 27 April 1995 in Canberra, Australia, to a father of Greek origin, George, and a Malay mother, Norlaila (“Nill”).

Because of poor health, Nill has been unable to travel to Wimbledon for what will be the biggest moment of her son’s career so far. Even when he is on home soil though, she cannot bring herself to watch. The Kyrgios rollercoaster is too much for her to handle.

“I haven’t watched him play for a while, actually,” Nill Kyrgios told the Sydney Morning Herald this week. “I can’t expose myself to that anxiety. I go into a really strange panic.”
