Nick Kyrgios defeated defending champion Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (11) 3-6 6-3 6-2 in his round of 16 at the US Open.

Kyrgios made the strongest start to the match and claimed the first break for Medvedev only to break straight back.

The Australian then went on to win 13-11 after losing two set points in the tie-breaker and ended an entertaining first set.

After such a stellar start, both players caught the foot of the gas with Kyrgios in the second set only to break through to win the set 6-3 before Medvedev himself stumbled late in the second game.

Nick Kyrgios is enjoying his best run ever at the US Open, which is also approaching the best of his career. The talented 27-year-old says a big reason for his recent success is his girlfriend Costine Hatzi.

Kyrgios defeated US Open top seed Daniil Medvedev 7-6(11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the fourth round on Sunday night.

Kyrgios, who had never advanced past the third round at the US Open, is now in the quarter-finals.

The Australian badboy was interviewed by Patrick McEnroe after his big win over Medvedev and was asked how things started for him. The infamous Headcase credits his girlfriend with helping him maintain his focus in New York for the first time in his career.

Assault

Nick Kyrgios has been called to an Australian court to face assault charges after he allegedly grabbed his ex-girlfriend Chiara Pasari last December.

Blake Foden of The Canberra Times reported that Kyrgios would be in court on August 2 and could face up to two years in prison if convicted.

“The nature of the allegation is serious, and Mr. Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously,” Attorney Jason Moffett said in a statement. “Given that the matter is before the court… he has no comment at this stage, but we will issue a media release in due course of time.”

Kyrgios (27) will face Christian Garrin in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon on Wednesday. This is his third appearance in a Grand Slam quarter-final, but he has never reached the semi-finals.

Kyrgios is coming into their round-of-16 matchup with a win over Brandon Nakashima.

Police were called to a hotel room shared by Pasari and Kyrgios last October after the tennis star was accused of cheating. No one was charged with a crime in that dispute.
