It was Thursday evening on All Stars duty in Rotary when Nico Hines first learned that his mother, Julie, had been found guilty of heroin supply charges.

Cronulla coach Craig Fitzgibbon was the first to reach out to Hines, who, after a brief conversation with his brother, Wade, turned off his phone and considered packing his bags and leaving the Indigenous All Stars camp.

Growing up, Nico Hines wanted to be a professional rugby league player. He says that dream brought him a sense of escapism and a purpose. However his childhood was difficult.

When Hines was between the ages of five and 12, his mother was in and out of prison.

“I don’t really remember mum being home. I probably remember seeing her for a couple of weeks and then she went back in,” the NRL player tells Mamamia’s No Filter.

Hines’ mother struggled with drug addiction, which began after her partner’s tragic death in a truck driving accident.

“She hit rock bottom when she lost him,” Hines says. He further said that the sight of police officers placing his mother on the back of a paddy wagon is an image that is unlikely to fade from his memory.

Salary

Nico Hines’ salary is $1.1 million. The 2022 Dally M Player of the Year has joined the top 10 highest-paid players in the NRL after consistent performances for the Sharks over the past two years.

Teeth

Young NRL gun Nico Hines has opened up about hitting ‘rock bottom’ and battling suicidal thoughts after finding himself broke, depressed and alone in a foreign city.

The 24-year-old from the NSW Central Coast started playing rugby league at the age of five and it’s the sport he thought and dreamed about.

He turned his dreams into reality when he debuted with the Melbourne Storm in 2019 – but his road to success was not without its bumps.

The fifth and eighth sat down with thanks. It is a collective to share how he dealt with crippling depression as a child while struggling to deal with the tragic death of his stepfather and a criminal mother who was in and out of prison for most of his childhood.
