Playoffs best of 5 or 7
The Stanley Cup playoffs consist of a best-of-7 series with a 2-2-1-1-1 format in each round. Here’s how the playoffs work through NHL.com:
The top three teams in each division will make the first 12 teams in the playoffs. The remaining four places will be filled by the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference, based on regular-season records and regardless of division.
In the first round, the division winner with the best record in each conference will be matched against the wild card with the least record; The wild card with the better record will play the second division winner.
The second and third placed teams in each division will meet in the first round in a bracket headed by their respective division winner. The winners of the first round within each bracket play each other in the second round to determine the four participants in the conference finals.
The home-ice advantage through the first two rounds goes to the team that ranks higher in the regular-season standings. In the Conference Finals and Stanley Cup Finals, the advantage of home-ice goes to the team that had the better regular-season record, even if the teams stand in the finals in their respective divisions.
