The NHL’s annual free-agent market opens at noon ET Wednesday. As always, expect a flurry of contract signings over the next several days as general managers bid to land the best unrestricted free agents.
The salary range for 2022-23 has risen to $82.5 million, with 24 of the 32 clubs having less than $20 million in cap space, 14 of which have less than $10 million. This can have a huge impact, placing significant limits on where players can sign and how much they can get.
Pittsburgh Penguins’ Evgeny Malkin and Chris Letang, Nashville Predators winger Philip Forsberg and Edmonton Oilers winger Evander Kane recently re-signed long-term contracts with their clubs. Nevertheless, the market still includes notable talents such as leftist Johnny Goudreau, versatile forward Claude Giroux and center Nazem Qadri.

Yes, even free agency with a bunch of iconic names re-signing from their current teams in the week – Chris Letang, Evgeny Malkin, Philip Forsberg, Evander Kane, Marc-Andre Fleury, Valerie Nichushkin, Ricard Raquel, Ville Husso — and to escape the tension of the unknown, the NHL’s 2022 UFA class is still swirling with plenty of compelling players.
And with a $1 million increase in the salary cap, those expansive general managers will have a little more incentive to splash pot on this summer’s Dougie Hamilton or John Tavares.

A big star re-upping with his team has already happened twice: the Pittsburgh Penguins signed veteran defenseman Chris Letang for six years and the Nashville Predators signed high-scoring winger Philip Forsberg for eight. Teams have until midnight EDT Tuesday — 12 hours before free agency begins — to get the most of signing players for eight years, after which they can only have up to seven.
