The National Hockey League was established in 1917 as the successor to the National Hockey Association (NHA). Founded in 1909, the NHA began play in 1910 with seven teams in Ontario and Quebec, and was one of the first major leagues in professional ice hockey. However, by its eighth season, a series of disputes with Toronto Blueshirts owner Eddie Livingstone led team owners of the Montreal Canadiens, the Montreal Wanderers, the Ottawa Senators, and the Quebec Bulldogs to hold a meeting to discuss the league’s future.

The NHL is extending its postponement of games as part of its pandemic response, announcing Friday that play has been paused through Dec. 27.
On Monday, the league, working with the National Hockey League Players’ Association, decided to pause all activities in an attempt to avoid a league-wide shutdown, after a number of teams were sidelined by a rise in positive COVID-19 cases.
Initially, games were postponed through Christmas Day, so the NHL had a chance to analyze testing results across the league and see teams’ readiness to resume play.
Teams are still set to resume practice on Dec. 26, with the target date for resumption of game play pushed back an additional day. The NHL plans to have another update on its plans to return to play by the end of Sunday.
Is the shutting down
The NHL will pause its season on Wednesday, two days before its planned Christmas break, the league announced Monday evening.
All NHL team facilities will be closed from Wednesday through Saturday as the league tries to weather several COVID-19 outbreaks. Players are set to report back to team facilities on Sunday and resume daily testing. The NHL schedule is set to resume on Dec. 27.
The decision left just three games on the NHL slate before the break: Monday’s game between the Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild, Tuesday’s matchup between the Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers (7 p.m. ET, ESPN+), and Tuesday’s game between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Vegas Golden Knights.
Shut down 2021
The NHL will begin a leaguewide shutdown Wednesday amid an increase of positive Covid-19 test results among players across the league, ESPN confirmed on Monday night.
Beginning the annual holiday break two days early means five additional games will be postponed, bringing the total this season to 49.
Two games slated for Tuesday are still set to go on as scheduled.
The league and NHL Players’ Association on Sunday said in a joint statement they were attempting to avoid a leaguewide shutdown and were making decisions on a team-by-team basis. The latest shift gives all 32 teams an extended break before players, coaches and staff can gather again Sunday to skate and undergo coronavirus testing.
Onhold
