Week 1 picks

More than 90 years later, with the legalization of sports betting in most states, that innovation has played an even more important role in football. This season, I’ll be taking over the space to watch each week’s N.F.L. Matchup not only as a competition between two teams, but as a competition between participants in a global marketplace, groping the point spread – or value – here and there.

Week 1 opens on Thursday, which will provide teams a first look after months of roster and coaching changes and a narrow window into when it will show any real cracks in the notoriously efficient market armor. Eight weeks are 1 game in which the home team is the underdog. In the past, it was often said that the home-field advantage on the spread was as high as 3 points. Today, the data says it’s probably south of 2, which is how I included it in my picks.

In the NFL season opener, the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams will go up against the Buffalo Bills, who have the best odds on 550 to win the title this year, per DraftKings. There is buzz in the bills, which probably explains why they get little support on the street on Thursday.

We had little agreement with the bills, but Kenyans are unwilling to take them over Ram.

“This game and line is a total toss-up, and my choice would be the Bills if it was being played on a neutral ground. But with the Bills traveling to three time zones to play Thursday night’s game? My picks for the AFC in the Super Bowl, but give me the Rams at home in Week 1.”

This year, Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis could take a big leap into an expanded role after his big-time playoff performance in the AFC Divisional Round against the Kansas City Chiefs, rushing in eight passes for 201 yards and four touchdowns. On the opposing edge, the Rams signed wide Allan Robinson II, who has recorded more than 1,147 receiving yards in two of his last three campaigns.
