Losing a lot in the NBA can actually be a good thing. On Tuesday night, the Magic were reminded of the fact when their 22-60 record prize was a lucky break in the lottery that entitles them to be the first pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.

Who will take Orlando?

It remains undetermined and deserving of debate. No matter what someone tries to tell you, it’s not 2003 (LeBron James) or 2012 (Anthony Davis) or 2019 (Zion Williamson), these were all years when every franchise has done the same thing with the first pick. The player will be selected. In 2022, at least three players – Chet Holmgren, Paolo Banchero and Jabari Smith – can reasonably go to No. 1, and I’m sure you can find fake drafts with each of them going to No. 1. but I? I’ve grown into a Holmgren-believer over the past year and really think Magic should pick him up with the No. 1 pick and pair him with former high school teammate and fellow Gonzaga alum Jalen Suggs.

The Orlando Magic won the long-awaited NBA Draft Lottery on Tuesday and will now be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, which is scheduled for June 23. The Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings and Detroit Pistons round out the top five.

This is the fourth time the Magic have won the No. 1 overall pick, second only to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the lottery era. The last time he was first drafted, he picked Dwight Howard in 2004. If they find someone like Howard this time, it will be a huge success.

There is no clear No. 1 overall selection in this year’s draft, and different candidates cover a wide range of positions and skills. Some possible options include Gonzaga’s big man Chet Holmgren, Duke forward Paolo Banchero, Auburn forward Jabari Smith and Purdue guard Jaden Ivey. Holmgren was the No. 1 pick in Kyle Boone’s latest mock draft, and Ivey is the top-rated prospect on his Top 75 Big Board.

For the Magic – which ended an Eastern Conference – worst 22-60 – a blow of fate came on the day the franchise topped the 1992 draft, which saw Shaquille O’Neill take No. The following year, he took on Chris Webber with the first pick, sending him to Golden State for Penny Hardaway, and three future first-rounders Orlando picked last overall in 2004, including Dwight Howard.

“It feels great,” said Jeff Veltman, president of Orlando Basketball Operations. “I’m so happy for my fans. They really stuck with us. And it helps to have nights like this, where you can really show the fruit of why you go through these phases and these cycles. And hopefully That they’re really excited about.”

Houston, Orlando and Detroit each had a 14 percent chance of coming up with the first pick, which would likely be Auburn’s Jabari Smith, Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren or Duke’s Paolo Banchero.

Draft 2022

We have officially entered the NBA Draft season.

The NBA Draft Combine is underway in Chicago, and on Tuesday night we learned the order for next month’s NBA Draft (excluding any trades, of course).

We saw a few surprises on lottery night in 2021, with Minnesota moving their top-three protected pick to the Warriors and Raptors surprisingly moving into the top four. Toronto used that pick to select Florida State’s Scotty Barnes, who would go on to win Rookie of the Year. this year? we will see…

With the order officially scheduled, we have 2022 Mock Draft ready to read as well as a new Mock Draft from our team Beat Writers. Plus, John Hollinger’s top 20 prospects (and some sleepers) have arrived.
