The National Hockey League was organized at the Windsor Hotel in Montreal on November 26, 1917, following the suspension of operations of its predecessor organization, the National Hockey Association (NHA), founded in 1909 in Renfrew, Ontario. The NHL immediately took the place of the NHA as one of the leagues that had fought for the Stanley Cup in an annual interleague competition before a series of league mergers and foldings left the NHL as the Stanley Cup in 1926.

The NHL trade deadline is 3 p.m. on 21st March. For us, it started a while back. That could happen in November, when Vegas traded in for longtime Jack Eichel. It could be in February, when the Flames made their first major move of midseason and added Tyler Toffoli.

Either way, it’s here, and so are we. This is The Athletic’s home for all your trading deadline coverage – reporting, rumours, predictions, previews – for the next few weeks, leading up to our longer live blog on March 21st.

Goal Leaders

For ice hockey players in the National Hockey League (NHL), scoring 500 regular season goals is considered a highly significant achievement. By the completion of the 2020–21 NHL season – the National Hockey League’s 103rd regular season of play – a total of 45 players have scored at least 500 regular season goals in their NHL careers.

A 500-goal career was first achieved in the NHL’s 41st season in 1957–58, when Maurice Richard scored his 500th goal in his 863rd game. The most recent player to score 500 goals is Sidney Crosby who did so on February 15, 2022.
