When the Denver Broncos scrutinize Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett for his head-coaching position, they might come across this quote from quarterback Aaron Rodgers:

“The hack has been an important part of our culture change and a part of our success on the offense,” Rodgers said. “I love him. Hope he doesn’t go anywhere. Until I do.”

That was on November 11, 2020.

Earlier, Rodgers had spoken the words “beautiful secret” about his future. This was preceded by Rodgers’ standoff with the Packers during the off-season before the 2021 season.

To say that the Broncos hired Hackett in an attempt to lure Rodgers to Denver would discredit Hackett’s resume. He has eight seasons of experience as an NFL offensive coordinator, including three previous with the Packers and a long history in the West Coast offense. In that role with the Jaguars, he helped lead them to the 2017 AFC Championship Game with Blake Bortles as quarterback. The following year, however, injuries doomed the Jaguars, and after a seventh consecutive defeat, Hackett was fired mid-season. That Hackett was also a candidate for the Jaguars’ head-coaching job this off-season, which explains what upper management thought of him even after then-coach Doug Maron fired him. (Maron was fired a year and a half later.)

The Denver Broncos have agreed to have Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett as their head coach, the team announced Thursday.

“Nathaniel Hackett is a dynamic leader and coach whose intelligence, innovation and charisma have impressed us from the very beginning of this process,” Broncos general manager George Patton said in a statement. “In addition to having a wonderfully aggressive mind, Nathaniel is an excellent teacher and communicator with a strong vision for all three phases of our team.”

Hackett, who has worked with the quarterback at all stages on the developmental curve, was scheduled to interview with the Jaguars on Thursday, but the Broncos stepped down on Wednesday night to seal a deal to keep him from moving to Jacksonville , sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

This is Hackett’s first stint as head coach, and he becomes Denver’s fourth different coach since the start of the 2016 season. He replaces Vic Fangio, who was fired earlier this month after leading 7-10 this past season, the Broncos’ fifth consecutive losing season.

The 42-year-old has been the Packers’ offensive coordinator for the past three years. Prior to this he was the quarterback coach of the Jaguars from 2015 to 2016 and the offensive coordinator from 2016 to 2018. He was also the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills in 2013 and 2014.

The appointment would be Hackett’s first job as head coach in the NFL. According to ESPN, he was supposed to interview with the Jaguars on Thursday, but the Broncos stepped in and managed to strike a deal.
