Nathan Merritt (born 26 May 1983) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 2000s and 2010s. A New South Wales State of Origin representative winger, he played in the National Rugby League for the South Sydney Rabbitohs, with whom he won the 2014 NRL premiership, and the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. Merritt has also played representative football for the City New South Wales, Indigenous All Stars and Prime Minister’s XIII teams. Merritt fainted while staying at his aunt’s house, where he was found unconscious on Friday afternoon. Reports suggest that his collapse was caused by a serious adverse reaction to prescribed painkiller medication. The 40-year-old man was immediately taken to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Camperdown, where he was listed in a serious condition.

The club confirmed that the 40-year-old player is in a serious condition.

“Nathan is in the thoughts and prayers of every rabbit at this time,” Southern CEO Blake Sollee said Saturday.

Merritt played in the Koori Knockout on the NSW Central Coast last weekend and spectators claimed the winger suffered an injury during a game.
