Nathan Wei Chen is an American figure skater. He is a three-time World champion, a 2022 Olympic silver medalist and 2018 Olympic bronze medalist in the team event, the 2017 Four Continents champion, a three-time Grand Prix Final champion, and a six-time U.S. national champion.

“I recently did an interview where I was asked if people ever ask me why I don’t play hockey because of the connotation that skating is quote-unquote feminine and hockey is quote-unquote masculine. I gave an ignorant response to the question and I want to apologize for that,” Chen said in a video statement on Twitter.
I am not sure what podcast Chen, 22, made his remarks on, but a user on Twitter saved it on his phone before the podcasters allegedly removed it from YouTube. Here is the podcast, with a transcript below.

Yes, certainly. Especially as a male athlete… as a straight male athlete in a… fairly…. homosexual-dominated sport, or LGBTQ-dominated sport… I think that there is that connotation and there is that.
“Well we don’t really wanna watch guys skate around,” and [unintelligible] we’d rather watch hockey or… we’d rather watch females do that, which I think is… pretty messed up in itself… we’re all doing this… for us, it’s a genuine sport… we spend our whole lives trying to hone this craft… and to just sort of be belittled like that is not… something that is… generally taken lightly.

The figure skating prodigy is currently reported as single.
Chen was previously reported dating fellow figure skater Amber Glenn back when they were teenagers and publicly recorded their love on social media.
When Chen’s not in the rink, he is a statistics and data student at Yale University. Chen took a leave of absence to perform in the Olympics but will return to school in August 2022.

Chen was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Chinese immigrant parents, Zhidong Chen and Hetty Wang. He has four older siblings – Colin, Alice, Janice, and Tony. Chen’s father is a research scientist and his mother is a medical translator.
The 22-year-old American took the top spot in the men’s short program on Tuesday with a score of 113.97, the highest ever mark for a short program. Chen had set a personal best earlier at the 2022 Winter Olympics with a score of 111.71 during the figure skating team event on Thursday.
