Gold performance

What was missing in this wonderful stretch of four years was an Olympic gold medal.

Missing, that is, until Thursday.

Nearly four years after a disastrous performance in Pyeongchang, Chen made his final appearance at the 2022 Winter Olympics and won the gold medal, becoming just the seventh American man to win the men’s individual event at the Games.

“I never thought I’d actually be able to do this,” Chen said.

Wait… why not?

“It’s hard!” The 22-year-old laughed. “I don’t know. It’s always been a dream of mine, but it’s a very difficult mountain.”

He took it easy on Thursday.

While skating for a compilation of music from the 2019 film “Rocketman,” Chen was equally graceful, technical, and fun in his four-minute performance at the Capital Indoor Stadium. He landed all five quad jumps in his long event for a score of 218.63, pushing his total for the competition to 332.60—and winning by more than 22 points.

The Quad King did it, and became the Olympic champion he had always dreamed of.

With a total score of 332.60, Nathan Chen became the fourth American man since 1984 to become an Olympic gold medalist. She defeated silver medalist Yuma Kagiyama of Japan, who had an overall of 310.05. It was her highest ever figure skating and the highest score of the season.

Chen’s performance included five quadruple jumps, all thanks to a mix of Elton John songs that showed both his personality and outstanding athleticism. Chen had already won three world championships, and had not lost a professional competition since those Olympics, until Skate America earlier this season.

The 22-year-old Yale graduate who finished fifth at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Chen owns the records for scores in the short event, free skate and overall skate in this scoring format.

It is the third goal medal for the United States at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, and one that was unforgettable.
