The New Zealand Warriors have their fourth coach in just two years, following the departure of Nathan Brown on Tuesday morning.

And with Sunday’s match against the Manly Sea Eagles in charge of Michael Maguire’s last game for the West Tigers, the NRL’s coaching roundabout is back in the spotlight.

But there are fundamental and long-term problems at the league’s struggling clubs – and merely swapping out the strategist on the hot seat won’t solve them.

Phil Rothfield, a veteran Daily Telegraph journalist, took a dig at the culture of recruiting and firing in the NRL on Fox League’s NRL 360 on Monday night.

New Zealand Warriors coach Nathan Brown has condoled the tragic death of his brother Denny.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Brown learned the shocking news just moments after the Warriors’ loss to the Dragons last weekend.

Brown’s wife Tanya reportedly went to Central Coast Stadium on Friday night to deliver the news to Brown after the game.

Denny, who was 42, reportedly died at Redfern, Sydney.

According to the Telegraph, Brown spent the weekend mourning with family.

New Zealand Warriors recruiting manager Peter O’Sullivan said the tragedy had affected Brown badly.

“Denny was always the life of the party and this is devastating news for the family,” O’Sullivan said.

“Everyone at Warriors, the owners, CEOs, employees and players are devastated and feel for their father John, Nathan, Tanya and their entire family.”

Coaching record

Brown was appointed coach of St George Illavarra for the 2003 season, becoming the youngest non-playing coach in the NRL in years at age 29. During his first season, in a match against Manly on Sunday, 13 April 2003 at Wynne Stadium, a frustrated Nathan Brown dismissed captains Trent Barrett, Brett Firman and Lance Thompson in the 53rd minute to score at 12-all. Brown slaps Barrett on the cheek and grabs Barrett and Thompson’s jersey. The incident was watched on the big screen by the crowd and other players and proved to be the turning point as Manly ran in five seconds half trying to win 38-12. After the match, Brown apologized to Barrett and was later fined $5,000 by the NRL.

On 19 July 2005, Brown was fined $10,000 by the NRL after claiming that the referees were biased against St. Brown made the remarks after his team was penalized 9-3 by the referee. Despite the penalty count, St. George Illawara still managed to beat Manly 36–10.

After finishing second in the 2005 competition, Brown’s team lost the preliminary final to the eventual premiership, the West Tigers. After several injuries and team losses during the 2007 season, he was under pressure to continue his work in the 2008 season.

On 1 April 2008, it was announced that the Browns would not coach St George Ilavra in the 2009 season, ending an affiliation with the club that spanned the start of the joint venture. He was replaced by Wayne Bennett. On 18 July 2008, it was announced that Brown had signed a 3-year deal with Super League club, Huddersfield, the same club joined by Tigers superstar Brett Hodgson.
