Fife made a strong start to the 2012 AFL season with a best-on-ground performance against Geelong in their Round 1 match at Paterson Stadium, recording 30 disposals and 2 goals in a 4-point win over the Cats. Fyfe began dealing with a shoulder injury during April, and attempted to play through it, but was ruled out and underwent surgery in May after it was removed during training. Fyfe sidelined for most of the season from rounds 6 to 18. He returned to Fremantle in Round 18 against Port Adelaide, returning to his previous form by recording 26 disposals. Fife lost only one game for the rest of the season, missing a game against Adelaide in Round 20 due to an ankle injury in his hotel room on the morning of the match. Despite playing only nine games in the home and away season – two of which were compromised because of his shoulder, Fife still received the second-most Brownlow Medal votes at Fremantle. On a per-game basis, Fyfe was clearly Fremantle’s best competitive capture winner , 14th overall in the AFL.

Fife dislocated his right shoulder during a loss at Sydney’s Metricon Stadium on Sunday, the same shoulder he removed in Round 12 against the Western Bulldogs.
After an initial dislocation sidelined Fyfe for three games, the dual Brownlow medalist returned to the line-up and managed to tough it out with a heavy shoulder strain.
But Sunday’s blow proved too much for the joint to handle and the 29-year-old will undergo a reconstruction this week instead of putting off surgery by the end of the season as originally planned.

This is the same right shoulder that Fyfe displaced in Round 12 against the Western Bulldogs, missing three weeks before returning in Round 16 to face Carlton.
Experienced midfielder/forward Michael Walters also suffered a hamstring injury after half-time.
Longmuir said in his post-match media conference that Fife would likely require end-season surgery, while it would be difficult for Walters to return by the end of the season.
