Chase Elliott turned the tables on Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch leading Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas and won a NASCAR Cup Series race at Nashville Superspeedway on Sunday night.
Hamlin and Truex spent most of the race at the front of the pack. Truex, who won only three stages while entering Nashville throughout the season, won the first two stages on Sunday. In that section, Hamlin led on laps 108 and Trux 73.
Rain delay update
Typically, a night out in Nashville is planned long in advance, as the city’s entertainment district attracts country music enthusiasts and tourists from far and wide. Chase Elliott, however, didn’t plan to be in Nashville until late Sunday night until Mother Nature forced him to—but he made the most of it, and now has a Gibson guitar to make up for his troubles.
Forced to run the second half of the Alley 400 on Sunday night after two protracted season delays, Elliott came to life and carefully survived the late race to win at Nashville Superspeedway for his second victory of the 2022 season. Elliott becomes the fifth repeat winner of the season, and his win in Nashville is his second win this season at a concrete racetrack. Elliot had previously won at Dover Motor Speedway in May.
Elliott had taken a comfortable lead on the final long green flag run and looked set for a sure win until Josh Bilicki blew an engine with nine laps to spare, setting up a late race caution and a frantic finish. Of. Elliott and crew chief Alan Gustafsson elected to stay out under caution, while their nearest competitor turned to the pit road, which proved to be the right decision on the last four laps run for the checkered flag.
Was the race postponed
Lightning and heavy rain halted the NASCAR Cup Series race for the second time of the day on lap 140 Sunday evening at Nashville Superspeedway.
The Alley 400 was delayed by lightning within an eight-mile radius of the track, before significant rain submerged the track. The race resumed after 10 pm. ET. Coverage continues on USA Network, Peacock, NBC Sports App, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
Whenever lightning is detected within eight miles of the race track, a 30-minute stoppage is mandatory. The first stop of the race was issued on lap 42. After several lightning strikes and a delay of a little over an hour, the race resumed when NASCAR gave a clear signal. The second stoppage lasted just over two hours.
Denny Hamlin dominated the event and held the lead at the red flag. His number 11 Toyota has driven the field for 78 out of 139 complete laps. His Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch and Christopher Bell are in second, third and fifth respectively. Kevin Harvick’s Stewart-Haas Racing Ford completes the top five in fourth place.
The race is not considered official until reaching the halfway point, which is lap 150 in Nashville.
