Former world number one Naomi Osaka has slipped to 85th place in the WTA singles world rankings released on Monday.
She dropped 71 places from her pre-Australian Open rank of 14 after losing in the third round to American Amanda Anisimova. The 24-year-old from Japan has now been placed outside the top 50 for the first time in nearly four years.
Freefall is the result of the elimination of points that count towards the ranking. Osaka played a limited schedule in 2021, took most of the year off for mental-health purposes, and did not generate enough points to remain in the upper tier of the rankings.
