Naomi Osaka: Indian wells 2022| Heckled| What was said to

Tennis star Naomi Osaka was in tears after a bystander made derogatory remarks during her second-round loss at the Indian Wells – BNP Paribas Open 2022 in California on Sunday. Osaka was upset with the crowd and lost her match 6–0, 6–4 to Veronika Kudermatova.

Osaka was trailing in the first set of their second round match when a woman in the crowd was shouting “You suck, Osaka”. The tennis star stepped into the game and approached the chair umpire asking him to do something. However, the organizers were not able to identify the person who made the unsolicited remarks.

As the match progressed, Osaka again went to the chair umpire and requested him to use the microphone so that he could address the crowd. An observer came to the court for a lengthy discussion with Osaka. “If it happens again, we’ll find it,” the supervisor told the umpire. The news agency AP reported that Kudermetova waited behind the baseline for the match to resume.

“To be honest, I think I’ve been harassed [and] before, it really didn’t bother me,” she explained. “But, like, I’ve seen a video of Venus and Serena here,” referencing an incident in 2001 when Serena Williams was booed and accused of competition manipulation from the Williams camp.

“If you’ve never seen it, you should see it,” Osaka said to the crowd, and she burst into tears again. He then congratulated his rival Kudermetova on the victory.
