The 24-year-old is the Australian Open champion which is the first Grand Slam of 2022 and runs from 17-30 January. She took an indefinite break from tennis after a third-round exit from the US Open in September 2021.

“I really thought I wouldn’t play for most of this year [2022],” Osaka told the WTA in a post-match press conference.
