Post game interview
Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams said the NBA should consider placing a special section in the stands reserved for families of visiting teams in the wake of Chris Paul’s family being harassed during Sunday’s playoff game in Dallas.
The incident occurred during Game 4 of the Western Conference semi-final between the Dallas Mavericks and the Suns. Sources told ESPN on Sunday night that several members of Paul’s family were in attendance, and they were harassed and physically approached by a fan in the crowd.
Paul addressed the upsetting Mother’s Day incident on social media after the Mavericks’ 111-101 win that leveled the series 2-2.
He tweeted: “It’s okay for the players to say something to the fans but the fans can lay their hands on our families…F-that!!”
Paul’s mother, Robin, as well as his wife, Jada, and their two children watched the game in the back seats of the Sons bench at the American Airlines Center, sources told ESPN. His mother had put his hand on him and his wife was pushed, a source familiar with the situation told ESPN, and Paul’s children were there to watch it. A different source said that when Paul came out of his seat, his wife was also chased.
“They felt very insecure,” a source familiar with the situation told ESPN.
“It’s a tough one, because it’s happening more and more,” Williams said Monday at Sons practice. “Situations are now getting to a place where I really feel like families, who are there to support their loved ones, need to be protected a little more. We need to protect these people in one class, one suit, Need to save in giving or not giving. Complete.
“Because we can’t wait for it to go up a level or two before what we need to do. Yesterday was unnecessary.”
Interview
The Philadelphia 76ers reportedly allowed assistant coach Monty Williams to interview with the Phoenix Suns about his head coaching vacancy.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported the update on Tuesday and noted Williams is the Sons’ “top target.”
According to Tania Ganguly and Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times, the 47-year-old Sixers assistant is also a candidate for the Los Angeles Lakers job with Tyrone Lew, both of whom are expected to have a second meeting with the Lakers this week.
Williams stepped down from coaching with the Oklahoma City Thunder after the 2015–16 season, when his wife Ingrid Williams died in a car accident in February 2016.
The Virginia native, a former short forward who played nine NBA seasons from 1994 to 2003, returned to the sidelines in June after signing with the 76ers.
In November, he discussed his decision to return during an appearance on The Broadcast, the Sixers podcast network (via Brian Seltzer of Sixers.com).
