Tavares Montgomery Williams (born October 8, 1971) is an American professional basketball coach and former player and executive, who is the head coach of the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Williams played for five NBA teams during a playing career spanning from 1994 to 2003. His NBA coaching career includes serving as an assistant coach, as an associate head coach, and as a head coach. Williams was the head coach for the New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans from 2010 to 2015. He served as an assistant coach with the United States national team under Mike Krzyzewski, and he served as vice president of basketball operations for the San Antonio Spurs. He heard Williams speak at length, and the 44-year-old coach pleaded compassion for the family of the driver, whose car collided with his wife’s vehicle, killing him and the driver.
Known for his deep Christian faith, Williams quoted several Bible verses, telling audiences at Crossing Community Church, “God causes all things to work.” He acknowledged that it was a “very difficult time” for him and his family, which includes five children, but said repeatedly that people “should not lose sight of what is important”
