Shaquan Montez Sweat (born September 4, 1996) is an American football defensive end for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Michigan State, Copiah-Lincoln, and Mississippi State before being drafted by the Washington Redskins in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Give Washington a lot of credit for getting a second-round pick for a player who is only under contract for this season. If Sweat wasn’t going to be re-signed, it might make sense to trade him now while still getting something in return. Washington has done so by a lot, which would be the 35th overall pick if the season ended today.
The Commanders lost a very good player in the sweat, so they did not get a perfect score. But the fact that they have a productive player ready to take Sweat’s place in the starting lineup largely makes up for the loss of Sweat. Casey Toohill, who will replace Sweat in the starting lineup, already has four sacks this season.

This acquisition makes no sense. As mentioned above, Sweat is about to enter free agency, so the Bears could wait until the offseason to try to sign him. But instead of making a bid for his services, the Bears decided to be proactive when acquiring him.
There may still be a sweat to be had in free agency, but the Bears should feel good about their chances of re-signing him. How things go for the remainder of the 2023 season will undoubtedly help determine whether Sweat stays.
