To avoid any scheduling unfairness where, just before the first playoff game, a team may have five days off and others six, there is no Monday night game during the final week of the regular season. From 2003 to 2005, one game was played on Thursday and another Monday under the Monday Night Football banner. Starting in 2006, when the series moved to cable, two games are played on the opening Monday night to capitalize on fan interest during “NFL Kickoff Weekend”.

The National Football League ended the first week of its 2021 regular season drawing an average of 15.29 million viewers across ESPN channels, including ABC network, for the Monday Night Football opener between the Las Vegas Raiders and Baltimore Ravens.

Protest

ESPN’s new “Monday Night Football” crew and other network staff members were part of a conference call Wednesday to discuss the upcoming season. Among the topics: The possibility of protests during the national anthem and how “MNF” would address that during a live broadcast.

Stephanie Druley, executive vice president for event and studio production, said ESPN’s policy is to cover the anthem when it is newsworthy, and that the crew will not shy away from covering protests about social justice.

After an offseason full of drama, Packers fans were almost certainly hoping for more out of Aaron Rodgers than what they watched in Week 1. Rodgers completed just 15 of 28 passes for 133 yards with two interceptions, and the offense mustered only a field goal as the Saints routed the Packers 38-3.

The Lions, meanwhile, received their first glimpse of offseason acquisition Jared Goff, whose overall stat line made his debut seem better than it was. He threw three touchdowns and one interception, both two of those touchdowns came in the final two minutes of play with the team already trailing the 49ers 41-17. The Lions lost 41-33 on Sunday.

Score

It was a good night to be named Aaron and play for the Packers. One Aaron — Rodgers — shook off a lackluster two-interception performance in Week 1 to turn in a near-perfect Week 2 performance at Lambeau Field in a 35-17 rout of divisional foe Detroit on Monday night.

The other Aaron — Jones — was Rodgers’ top target in the red zone for much of the game. The duo connected for three touchdown passes and Jones added a rushing touchdown as well. After putting up just three points in Week 1, things looked bleak for the Packers as they trailed 17-14 at halftime. But they outscored the Lions 21-0 the rest of the way. Green Bay was also helped Monday by nine Detroit penalties for 78 yards.

Though some numbers went in Detroit’s favor, including total yards (344-323) and yards per play (6.1-5.3), Green Bay had more first downs (25-19), possessed the ball for longer (33:25-26:35) and forced two turnovers compared to Detroit’s none.
