Molly Seidel (born July 12, 1994) is an American long-distance runner. Seidel represented the United States at the Great Edinburgh Cross Country in 2012, 2013, and 2018. In her first marathon, Seidel finished second at the 2020 US Marathon Olympic Trials. Later, she managed to win a bronze medal in the third marathon of her career at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. At the University of Notre Dame, Seidel was a 4-time NCAA champion, 6-time NCAA All-American, 6-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion, and the 2016 Female ACC Athlete of the Year.

On a clear December night in 2019, Molly Seidel was at a rooftop holiday party in Boston, wearing a black velvet dress, doing what a lot of 25-year-olds do: having a joint among friends. Going through the journey, wondering what she was doing with her life.

“You should run the Olympic trials,” said her sister Izzy, as smoke swirled in the cool air above The Trackhouse, a retail shop and community center on Newbury Street that is run by running brand Tracksmith. “It would be hilarious if you did this as your first marathon.”

Molly, an elite 10K racer who spent most of 2019 injured, looked at the city lights and laughed. Why not? She qualified for the trials by winning the San Antonio half with a time of 1:10:27. (“The shock of the century,” as he said.) True, 13.1 miles wasn’t 26.2 — but running a marathon was something to do. If only because he had never done it before.
