Wild card scores
MLB’s first wild-card series weekend is in full swing. And today four teams can be sent for packing.
As the playoff ground expands to 12 teams for the 2022 postseason, the four best-of-three series will determine which teams play in the ALDS (against the Houston Astros or the New York Yankees) and the NLDS (against either the Atlanta Braves). Will move on Los Angeles Dodgers).
Saturday’s festivities begin with a tour of the Tampa Bay Rays looking to prevent an elimination against the Cleveland Guardian, followed by the Seattle Mariners hoping to take out the Blue Jays in Toronto. Then it’s the New York Mets trying to avoid a home sweep against the San Diego Padres and, finally, the Philadelphia Phillies eyeing a series win against the Cardinals in St.
Follow the action below throughout the day with start times, pitching matchups and starting lineups, followed by in-game updates and takeaways after the conclusion of each game.
Wild card format
The No. 1 seed will be the team with the best league record. The No. 2 seed is the second best division winner. The final division winner will claim the number 3 seed, while the fourth-to-sixth seed will be determined by record alone – using tiebreakers if necessary.
As one might assume, the No. 3 seed will host the No. 6 seed in the wild-card round, with No. 4 and No. 5 also facing each other.
Apart from the involvement of more teams in the wild-card round, the format will also be different. Instead of a single-game wild-card showdown, the round will feature a best-of-three series. All games in the Wild Card Series will be hosted by the team with the highest seed.
Once a team has achieved two wins in the Wild Card Series, it advances to the Divisional Series.
circle series
Some changes have also been made in the divisional series. There will be no re-seeding in the divisional round, so the No. 1 seed may eventually face a higher seed than the No. 2 seed.
The No. 1 seed will face the winner of the 4/5 game to ensure that it does not face another division winner—or the team that defeated it, until the league championship, should it advance to the league championship. Theoretically, a No. 2 seed can withstand a No. 6 seed while a No. 1 seed can withstand a No. 4 seed.
As far as the divisional series is concerned, things should look pretty familiar. Each of the remaining eight teams will compete in a best-of-five series with a 2–2–1 format—with high seeds with home ground advantage.
