Michael Gerard Tyson (born June 30, 1966) is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1985 to 2005. Nicknamed “Iron Mike” and “Kid Dynamite” in his early career, and later became known as “The Baddest Man on the Planet”. Tyson is considered one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time. He reigned as the undisputed World Heavyweight Champion from 1987 to 1990. Tyson won his first 19 professional fights by knockout, 12 of them in the first round. Claiming his first belt at the age of 20 years, four months and 22 days, Tyson holds the record for the youngest boxer to win a heavyweight title. He was the first heavyweight boxer to hold the WBA, WBC and IBF titles simultaneously, as well as the only heavyweight to unify them in succession. The following year, Tyson became the lineal champion when he knocked out Michael Spinks in 91 seconds of the first round. In 1990, Tyson was ousted by underdog Buster Douglas in one of the biggest ups and downs in history.

Tyson released a statement to ET’s Philiana Ng on Thursday after series executive producer Steven Rogers said the boxer could not join the project due to a rights issue:

“[That] is a lie. My right to life option was exhausted years ago. Neither Hulu nor any of their supersilient teams ever tried to engage in any conversation with this black man. In their eyes, I Still just a n—- r on the auction block ready to be sold for my own profit regardless of my value or that of my family.

“They say this story is a black man’s exploration. It’s like a black man’s exploits. Hulu seems to have covered their tracks by hiring black sacrificial lambs to help them survive their past lives.” May I always remember this blatant disregard for my dignity.”

Hulu announced in June that it would be releasing a series called “Mike” starring Trevante Rhodes as Tyson on August 25. It added that the eight-episode show “explores the ups and downs of Tyson’s boxing career and personal life — from being a beloved global athlete to a pariah and back again.”

Rogers and fellow executive producer Karin Geist said they wanted to tell Tyson’s story from a broader perspective, per ET.

“For me, as a writer, as a storyteller, I really don’t like to rely on just one source,” Rogers said. “I really like to do research and get all these different opinions and then put together a story around all of that. I don’t like being beholden to just one person.”

Geist said: “We really wanted to make sure that we were as comprehensive as possible in the research and dramatization of the events of his life and that we could make sure we were there for other conversations happening around those things as well. The doors were opening.”

Whats wrong with

Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson is widely known for his lisp. Some fans weren’t sure if Tyson’s speech impediment was something that resulted from his career in the ring or that it developed in childhood.

Tyson opened up about his Lisp in his autobiography which appeared in New York magazine in 2013.

The “Iron Mike” people know today was very different as a kid. Tyson said of growing up in Brooklyn in the 1960s, according to The Guardian, “I was an angry kid, very shy, almost shy-shy, and I spoke with a Lisp.” He was constantly bullied for his presence.

He still remembers the day when at the age of 7 someone tried to steal his lunch and he ran home. “I still feel like a coward because of that bullying,” Tyson wrote. “It’s a wild feeling, being that helpless you never forget that feeling. That was the last day I went to school. I was seven years old and I had just gone to class.”

“The kids called me ‘Little Fairy Boy,'” Tyson added in a 2014 interview with The Guardian.
