Michael Barry Sullivan (born February 27, 1968) is an American ice hockey coach and former player. He is the current head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was a fourth-round selection by the New York Rangers in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft, 69th overall and played 11 NHL seasons with the San Jose Sharks, Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins and Phoenix Coyotes. Internationally, he represented the United States twice, including at the 1997 World Championship.

Penguins
During the Penguins’ 5-4 shootout preseason win against the Buffalo Sabers at the PPG Paints Arena on Tuesday, head coach Mike Sullivan suffered a wound on his forehead after being hit by a puck at the start of the third period.
Sullivan left the Penguin bench and was taken to the team’s medical facilities for some repairs. He returned after about nine minutes of playing time and completed the contest with some stitchwork applied to the damage.
“He’s a big boy,” defenseman Chris Letang joked after the game. “He can take it. He’s been in the league for a while.”
The 6-foot-2 Sullivan spent 11 seasons in the NHL as a hard-scrabble checking center in the 1990s and early 2000s. So, this isn’t the first time he’s been hit by a puck
But it’s one thing to absorb one of the shin guards and shoulder pads. Doing it in a suit is another matter.
“It was a fast puck,” said Sullivan, who was quite happy about the crash after the game. “I couldn’t move quickly enough. I grabbed it at the last minute out of the corner of my eye and just reacted. But couldn’t move that fast. Wrong place at the wrong time.”

Mike Sullivan will always remember the night he found his mother, Myrna, on the back deck wearing slippers and a nightgown – and wielding a hammer.
He asked Mike and his high school friends to tear down the old deck at their home in the coastal community of Marshfield, Mass., and build a new one. But when summer jobs and baseball games pushed that job backwards, she got tired of waiting. In the dark outside, he began tearing down the deck boards himself.
“She was my mom,” said the Penguin’s coach, laughing. “She’d ask you to do chores around the house. You might get a couple of chances. If you don’t get it, she was going to take matters into her own hands.”
