“Obviously disappointed. Disappointing for our fans, disappointing for our supporters and our team. Credit to Iowa. They are a fine football team that took full advantage of the opportunities we presented. Obviously, as head coach “It’s my job to tell us to play well, which we didn’t do today. But I also think it’s important that we realize it’s just a game. And it’s important for us as a team to understand that.” That one sport should not and cannot be defined by us, and we cannot let one game play poorly, lead to another,” he said.

The biggest disappointment was that Maryland had a packed house of fans hoping to see the team as a program take a big step forward in its progress. Instead, the Terps dominated. “Yeah, that’s the part that’s probably the most frustrating for me because the head coach is, you know, our fans have been behind us. They showed. We’ve had a few opportunities here over the years. We’ve taken advantage of that energy and support. What they continue to bring. As I told my team, I hope they don’t let a game define them. Just like we won’t let it define us. But it’s our job to do that. Do a better job of providing a better performing team on the field.” We have these opportunities, so yeah, I definitely feel like it was a missed opportunity on our part. Disappointed for my fans because when we needed them they came for us. And it’s on me and it’s on all of us as a team to find a way to leverage that when we have these kinds of opportunities.”

While on a recent call with the Terraps commit, Maryland head coach Mike Loxley shared some wisdom that puts the day’s monumental decisions into perspective in a unique way.

“After choosing a wife, this is the second most important decision in his life,” Locksley tells a mother of a recruiter on the other end of the call.

“And it’s really the first decision he’s making as a man,” says Loxley.

The whole call is actually a good thing, and provides a glimpse into why Coach Locks has been widely regarded as one of the best recruiters in college football for most of his career.

The analogy of bringing the young man in front of the “bridge of manhood” is also a nice touch.
