Mike Krzyzewski was about to retire when the Duke Blue Devils season ended. As it turns out, the team made it to the last four as the second seed. His wait rival in New Orleans was the UNC Tar Heels. If there was one thing Duke fans couldn’t stomach, it was Coach Kay’s career being ended by the Tar Heels.
On Saturday, the Dukes lost to North Carolina 81-77 to finish in the NCAA Tournament. What’s more, the Blue Devils’ chance to coach Kay to a sixth national title won’t become a reality.
Here’s everything Krzyzewski had to say after the game while interviewed by CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson.
Interview
After a disastrous 81-77 loss to UNC in the Final Four, Mike Krzyzewski talks with CBS reporter Tracy Wolfson about his final game as Duke’s head coach.
Coach Kay opened the interview by praising UNC guard Caleb Love’s shot making, who hammered a huge three nail to top the Tar Heels with 28 seconds to go four. He also scored a pair of free throws to secure the deciding four-point gap.
After lamenting Duke’s 12-of-20 effort from the free-throw line as the catalyst for the loss, Krzyzewski praised the Tar Heels for their achievement.
“Congratulations to them. I thought both teams played their hearts out and it’s an emotional win and it’s an emotional loss and that’s how a game should be,” he told Wolfson.
Record vs unc
The all-time record in the Duke versus North Carolina rivalry is 142–115 in 256 games, with North Carolina leading. However, since 2000, Duke has built some serious ground at UNC, going 31-21 in 52 games.

Mike Krzyzewski’s record against North Carolina is 50-47.
The legendary coach began his coaching career with Duke in 1980 and led the Blue Devils to five national titles, 13 Final Fours and 15 ACC championships. In his last weekend of coaching college basketball, Coach will fight to widen the gap between himself and the North Carolina Tar Heels in the history books.
