Limp
“At the beginning of the 1998-1999 season, I started with pain in my left hip,” Krzyzewski recalls. “I was advised that I should have hip replacement surgery, but I couldn’t see myself taking the time to have surgery. I thought I could just manage the pain.”
As head coach of Duke’s men’s basketball team since 1980, Krzyzewski has led the Blue Devils to four NCAA championships, 11 Final Four, 12 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) regular season titles, and 13 ACC tournament championships. He guided the US men’s basketball team to gold medals at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. But Krzyzewski says that if he continued to ignore his ongoing pain, his professional achievements would be lost. His decision to deal with his condition led to surgery and rehabilitation once again in 1999 and again in 2002.
“I had to take a good deal of medication to deal with the pain,” he says. “And yet, I became less and less mobile. It was basically a rub of bone against bone. I was having a hard time getting out on the court, and I had to sit for about the whole game when I coached I was constantly tired, and I spent the whole season in pain. I really feel like we lost the national championship because I couldn’t even coach at the time. So a few days after the season was over, I was in Went and got his hip replaced.”
Surgical results were excellent. Krzyzewski says his pain immediately disappeared and he faced rehabilitation with enthusiasm.
“This type of pain causes a significant loss of mobility,” Krzyzewski explains. “It changes your gait and your body mechanics. It took me a while to break out of the limp, even after hip replacement surgery. When the pain is stable you do a lot of compensatory work.”
