Boyfriend:

Spending months apart from her boyfriend Aleksander Aamodt Kilde is tough on Mikaela Shiffrin but having someone she can share every detail of her private and professional life with is what makes their relationship special, the U.S. skier said.

Twice Olympic gold medallist Shiffrin is one of the biggest stars of the Beijing Olympics and a favorite to medal in alpine skiing, while Kilde is a leading contender to add to Norway’s alpine skiing tally in the men’s speed events.

Tragedy:

The pair began dating last year when Shiffrin was devastated by the tragic death of her father and Kilde was recovering from a terrible knee injury that left him on crutches for months.

“We met somewhere around seven years ago and I think he started the conversation by saying ‘Hi’,” Shiffrin told Reuters.

“He also sent the first friend request. He technically asked me on a date later that year but I sort of denied him. I thought I was being cute, but he seems to have taken it as a rejection.”

Jeff Shiffrin died after injuries sustained in a Feb. 2, 2020, accident. Mikaela took a break from skiing following his passing to grieve. The world knew about her break, but not the depth of the darkness driving it.

Today:

US ski star Mikaela Shiffrin has admitted she would be disappointed to leave the Beijing Olympics without a medal, but has warned it is impossible to have two “perfect weeks” at a Games.

Covid:

Shiffrin is one of the headline acts at Beijing 2022, hunting a third gold after triumphing in slalom at the 2014 Sochi Games and giant slalom four years later in Pyeongchang. Aged just 26, the four-time world slalom champion and three-time World Cup overall winner has progressed from a pure technical skier to a true all-rounder.

She is the sole skier, male or female, to have won in all six International Ski Federation (FIS) disciplines, having stepped up from slalom and giant slalom to also claim World Cup wins in both the super-G — four times — and downhill (two) as well as parallel slalom and alpine combined.

She is a three-time Overall World Cup champion, a four-time world champion in slalom, and a six-time winner of the World Cup discipline title in that event. Shiffrin is the youngest slalom champion in Olympic alpine skiing history, at 18 years and 345 days.

By winning her second Olympic gold medal in the 2018 giant slalom, Shiffrin tied Ted Ligety and Andrea Mead Lawrence for the most Olympic gold medals ever won by an American Olympian in alpine skiing.

She is one of only 5 Americans to ever win the World Cup overall title. In World Championships, she is the most decorated American alpine skier in history, having won most medals (11) overall, a record six of them gold.
