3000th hit:
Cabrera became the 33rd player in the league to reach the mark during the first inning in a game against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday. After the 39-year-old hit the milestone on his home turf at Comerica Park, Rockies shortstop José Iglesias ran over to hug his former teammate.
The Tigers hitter is the first Major Leaguer from Venezuela — and only the seventh player — in the league’s history to grab 3,000 hits and 500 home runs, joining Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Albert Pujols, Eddie Murray, Rafael Palmeiro and Alex Rodriguez.
3000 hit video:
Cabrera has been an utter force of nature at the plate from nearly the moment he entered the league, and he is still a daunting presence in his 20th season.
A career .310 hitter, he led major league baseball in batting average four times, hitting over .320 for five years straight.
He won the 2012 AL MVP with a .330/.393/.606 line, earning the first Triple Crown in 45 years, and won the MVP award again the next year by hitting .348/.442/.636, with 44 home runs in both seasons.
In addition to those laurels, Cabrera has won seven Silver Sluggers and helped lead the Marlins to the 2003 World Series title.
World Series:
Still an imposing presence at 39, Cabrera made history by grounding an opposite-field single to right through the shift in the first inning of Detroit’s game against Colorado.
Cabrera immediately raised his right arm as he headed toward first base. The crowd of 37,566 at Comerica Park gave him a rousing ovation and chanted “Miggy! Miggy!” while fireworks were shot off from beyond the center field fence.
