Jose Miguel Cabrera Torres (born April 18, 1983), nicknamed “Migi”, is a Venezuelan professional baseball first baseman and designated hitter for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball (MLB). This milestone hit comes a day after the series opener with the Rockies was postponed due to rain, and two days later the Yankees deliberately moved to Cabrera when he sat on 2,999 hits. New York were trailing 1-0 in Thursday’s game at the time and the Tigers were second and third with two dismissals in the eighth inning. The move gave the Yankees a left-on-left matchup against Austin Meadows. Strategically, it was a sensible move, although it backfired when Meadows doubled in two runs.

“We have a lot of respect for Meadows behind (Cabrera),” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after the game. “Just left to the left, I felt like a matchup, I just liked it better in that position. Baseball calls me there. Tough decision… a little more gut-wrenching than usual.”
