José Miguel Cabrera Torres (born April 18, 1983), nicknamed “Migi”, is a Venezuelan professional baseball first baseman and designated hitter for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball (MLB). Since his debut in 2003, he has been a two-time American League (AL) Most Valuable Player (MVP) award winner, a four-time AL batting champion, and an 11-time MLB All-Star. He has played at first and third base for most of his major league career, but has primarily played in left and right field since 2006. He claimed the 17th MLB Triple Crown in 2012, the first man to do so in 45 seasons.

Miguel Cabrera: 3000| How many hits does have| 3,000 hits

Tigers star Miguel Cabrera entered the season with 2,987 hits, just 13 shy of MLB’s coveted 3,000-hit club. While Cabrera has left first base for Detroit’s prized prospect Spencer Torkelson, the 20-year-old veteran is still hitting out regularly. He has already collected four hits over the season in 18 at-bats, giving him the pace to reach 3,000 at the start of the year.

Although Cabrera may no longer have the Triple Crown’s heavy presence at the plate, he is still an important part of Detroit’s lineup. Even after Cabrera got 3,000 hits, he should still be a fixture in the order as the Tigers try to keep pace in the AL Central.

Reaching 3,000 hits would be another achievement in Cabrera’s Hall of Fame career. He reached 500 home runs last season with an impressive list of achievements that include:

Two AL MVP Awards

four batting titles

11 All-Star Selections

2012 Triple Crown

7 Silver Slugger Awards

And yet, the road to 3,000 hits is somewhat surprising, even for a player of Cabrera’s caliber.

Detroit Tigers left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez spent his entire 2012 season for Low-A Delmarva, an affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. He was 19 at the time and three seasons away from making his MLB debut.

That year, Miguel Cabrera – a fellow Venezuelan – made history in the big leagues.

He won the first Triple Crown since Carl Yastrzemsky for the Boston Red Sox in 1967. The now 39-year-old Cabrera leads the American League with a .330 batting average, 44 home runs and 139 RBIs.

“Who hasn’t seen that?” Rodriguez said, 10 years later. “If you’re from Venezuela, you’re going to see it. Venezuelan baseball players, you see Migi all the time. Getting the opportunity to watch it on TV, it was something special. You were watching Reigns play. TV.”

Tigers designated hitter Miguel Cabrera motions to Royals pitcher Scott Barlow while batting during the eighth inning of the Tigers’ 3-1 loss to the Royals on Saturday, April 16, 2022 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Rodriguez signed a five-year, $77 million contract with the Tigers in November. The 29-year-old joined forces with Cabrera, who influenced his decision to sign with Detroit.

Rodriguez has admired Cabrera for most of his life. They became friends in 2014 while working at the same training facility in Miami.

And Cabrera is five hits away from the historic 3,000 milestone.

“For me, it’s something special, especially for my country,” Rodriguez said, before the Tigers began their three-match series against the New York Yankees at Comerica Park. “I know how big he is in my country, how big he is in Venezuela. It’s going to be something special to be a part of, and I really appreciate being a part of it. I’ll be here when he’s found.”

Cabrera of Maracay, Venezuela, leads his country in MLB hits (2,995), doubles (559), home runs (502), RBI (1,807) and BWAR (68.72).

3,000 hits

Three-true-outcomes baseball is at an all-time high, team strikeouts per game has remained above eight since 2017, above three since 2016, and batting averages have been declining every year since 2019. It’s not a lament about how the current game is played, it’s just the reality: as batting average has decreased in importance, so has the number of hits.

Altuve and Freeman could round things up and reach 3,000 hits, but that’s unlikely. Cabrera looks like he may be the last entry in the 3,000-hit club for some time.
